There is no miracle dry mouth treatment, but there are simple things to do:
- Drink more water: This is the most obvious remedy, but drinking water regularly is the best way to stay hydrated. In fact, studies have shown that mild dehydration can amplify the dry mouth factor. So to avoid dry mouth, remember to stay well hydrated throughout the day. To find out if you’re drinking enough water, I recommend this tip. By simply drinking more water on a daily basis, there is a good chance that this dry mouth phenomenon will disappear.
- Avoid certain medications: Over 90% of dry mouth cases are caused by medications. Indeed, certain types of medication can cause dry mouth. These include: – antihistamines – antihypertensives – hormonal drugs – bronchodilators If you think your medication is drying your mouth, talk to your doctor. But don’t stop a treatment without medical advice.
- Avoid drinking coffee: Some habits make dry mouth symptoms worse. This is the case with coffee. Indeed, drinking coffee or caffeinated tea often leads to dry mouth. Why is this? Because caffeinated drinks are often dehydrating. Reducing or stopping your coffee consumption is an effective way to combat dry mouth.
- Chew gum: To activate saliva production, you can also chew sugar-free gum. This will easily relieve dry mouth for a while. The same applies to sugar-free sweets, which stimulate saliva production.
- Improve your oral hygiene: Dry mouth can be both a symptom and a cause of poor oral hygiene. The only way to stop it is to improve your oral hygiene! Daily brushing with a good toothbrush and toothpaste is essential to maintain good oral hygiene. You can also add an alcohol-free mouthwash to make sure you have a healthy mouth all day.
- Use a humidifier: If your mouth is dry, it may be because the air inside your house, flat or even your office is too dry. To find out, get an indoor hygrometer. If the humidity level is below 40%, you can invest in a humidifier that will diffuse humidity in your rooms. This will make the air you breathe less dry and will also reduce the dryness of your mouth. Also consider running the humidifier at night, especially if your mouth is very dry when you sleep.
