The different types of stomach ache
Heartburn is one of the most common types of stomach ache and is also a common reason for medical consultation. It is characterized by pain in the breastbone area but never in the lower abdomen.
This type of stomach ache occurs after meals and can be accentuated when lying down. You may also have a sour or bitter taste in your mouth associated with acid reflux (GERD). Causes of this pain can include eating too much food, stress, pregnancy, a side effect of a medication, among others.
Stomach cramps cause the muscles around the stomach to contract. These pains are very sharp and can have various origins. They occur in the so-called epigastric region and are often related to eating. They can come back frequently if you are used to eating spicy or acidic food. Other causes can be looked for such as a gastric ulcer (rarer) or a transient gastritis (inflammation of the stomach lining). It is also a symptom of gastroenteritis.
Lower abdominal pain
If you have pain in your lower abdomen, there may be several reasons and these may differ if you are a man or a woman. It can be due to appendicitis, peritonitis, cystitis, menstrual pain in women or prostatitis in men.
